Portia Lee James DeGeneres (also called Portia de Rossi) is a popular Australian as well as an American actress, model, and an philanthropist. She changed her name legally in the year 15years old, adopting her name from the Shakespearean play 'The Merchant of Venice', and then adopting the Italian de Rossi name, which she thought was beautiful. Portia says that she believes it is the bravest thing she's done. The struggle she had with her sexuality spurred her to change her name. Portia was first introduced to film through a romantic comedy drama called 'Sirens', where she appeared alongside Hugh Grant. The actress also appeared on several American TV shows and films including Too Something, Nick Freno, the Licensed Teacher, Arrested Development, and Better Off Ted. She made her name for herself with her portrayal as a Boston-based attorney who was named Nelle Porter, in a TV comedy series called, Ally McBeal. Her character was the show's primary comedy relief.
